In Memory

Mike Flynn

Mike Flynn

Very unfortunately another one of our classmates has passed away. Mike passed away on 3/14/21 and is survived by his wife Leslie, sons Scott and Kevin who reside in Boise  and his sister Janet Johnsen from  Renton. Janet said that she will never forget his laugh. Mike will be sorely missed by his family, friends and classmates. Mike may the sun always shine on you, the wind be at your back and may you RIP.

Mike and I have corresponded the last 7 or 8 years. They've been hard years for him as he struggled with serious health issues. I heard from him after his most recent surgery, which had been more extensive than anticipated and required a week-long hospital stay. I knew then that he must be nearing the end of his journey. Mike was one of the warmest, most fun-loving people I've known in my life. He always greeted me like a long-lost friend, with a smile and a big hug. I suspect he was like that with everybody. Rest in peace, Mike. You've earned your rest. I'll drink a shot of whisky in your memory on St. Pat's Day.

My heart is broken.  I loved Michael and but for a few short periods of correspondence we had been out of touch.  He always sent me a note on my birthday however.  I was hoping to see his name on the reunion list so I could try and catch up. He was a lovely, funny big hearted boy with a great laugh and my mother's favorite.  I think of him all the time.  Don't wait to reconnect.

Flynner, You will be missed indeed! Mike was a friend to many and loved his family to the very end. I visited Mike and Leslie several times at their Boise home overlooking a golf course. Mike would sit out on his deck, drinking Gallo and share his memories of the good times at RHS, his many loves and how proud he was of his family. Mike had a very rare heart/lung condition and underwent surgery several years ago in Wisconsin with a long recovery road ahead of him. He continued to work with veterans suffering with post war maladies and told me he would soon get his golf swing back and looked forward to the next reunion after covid. Rest in peace Flynner, we'll miss you.

Mike and I shared many of the misadventures of growing up. We developed a routine , in the 7th grade, to buy cigarettes at every machine in the Renton Highlands. Mike, with his charm and wit, would distract the while I dropped in the 35 cents pulled the lever and tried to blend in. Mike lived next door and became close to my family..He always stopped by to visit my parents through the years when he was in town, and would make then laugh. He made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him and will be missed. See you in the next life my friend.

Mike and I were in grade school at St. Anthony's.  Even then, his sense of humor stood out.  Mike lived in the highlands.......the bowling alley shootin pool, the drive in where Dona Dent worked, Presly's 52 Buick, Market Basket.......We double dated, drank beer, and went on a road trip to Sun Valley.  I saw Mike at reunions.  He talked about his family and his life.  I always thought I'd look him up.  My loss.  He was a great guy.  Rest in piece.

Mike and I drove up to Cascade Junior College in Mt Veron prior to graduating. We applied and were accepted at the school. We looked around for a place to live and figured that wouldn't be a problem. I came back up a week or so later and found a part time job. We were excited about going to school there. I needed to borrow a small amount of money from my father for tuition and books etc. Long story short I didn't get the money. Biggest disappointment of my young life. My only direction was the military in 1965. It was such a momentous moment in my life as I saw it. I felt bad about letting Mike down.

I lost contact with Mike and ended up doing two tours in Vietnam. I ended up being exposed to Agent Orange and am now a 80% disabled Vet from the exposure. Turns out it was a momentous and disappointing part of my life. I had hoped to reconnect with Mike and was so sorry and sad to hear of his passing. Mike was the kind of guy that everyone liked. Not being able to go off to school with Mike was a huge let down and turned out to have long range consequences. I'm so sorry my friend. We had big plans. I know that you ended up in the military as well. Bless your family.
