Linda, we need to know more about this ... it's the honorable thing ... our Classmate deserves to be acknowledged properly, not that you haven't done your best, but someone knows more, and someone needs to put it down, so that the rest of us knows ... thank you Linda, that was very kind of you, as usual ... I'll be the hardass here!
Charles Petchnick served with C Co. 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division. My guess is, he went through Basic training at Ft. Lewis WA, advanced Infantry at Ft. Gordon GA, a two week leave and then on 4 Jan. 1967, he arrived in RVN. His Battalion took part in Operation Cedar Falls in Tay Ninh province (not a nice place. Been there!) immediately on his arrival. His job was 11B, Infantry rifleman. He was a PFC.
Charles died when his unit was ambushed by enemy forces on 29 April 1967. He was killed out-right, multiple fragmentation wounds, body recovered. Awarded- Combat Infantryman's Badge, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/campaign star, Vietnam Service Medal w/bar
I remember him well from Mr. Warren's auto shop class. That was a good time. Terry Pardee references Tay Ninh Province. I spent some time there myself on top of Nui Ba Den. I feel fortunate to have survived the summer of '69 in Tay Ninh Province, and am very sorry to hear that Chuck did not. At the time of his death, I was playing soldier in Korea, but had the opportunity to see Tay Ninh Province for myself a few years later. Chuck was a good guy.

Charles, there was no word of you back at the '75 reunion ... did the killing fields of Vietnam get you?
Linda West
Charles was killed in action on April 29th, 1967.
